Indigenous DANCEPL3Y – With Roxane Letterlough
For our final day of EDCO 3100, we participated in Indigenous DANEPL3Y with Roxane Letterlough. Indigenous DANCEPL3Y is a way for teachers to incorporate Indigenous cultures in the classroom. It features music from Indigenous creators across Canada. Indigenous culture and stories inspire many of the dance moves in Indigenous DANCEPL3Y, making this a fun way for children to learn physical education. This would be a fun activity to include as a physical education unit, as DANCEPL3Y is easily adaptable to be inclusive of all abilities.
From the Trenches: Championing Change – Talk by Dr. Imogene Lim, Anthropologist, VIU
On February 5th, 2024, I attended a lecture given by Dr. Imogene Lim on Racism in British Columbia. In her lecture, Dr. Lim discussed discrimination under B.C’s Human Rights Code and the rise of white supremacy. Dr. Lim focused on the experiences of Chinese-Canadians in British Columbia, sharing stories of her own mother. Dr. Lim stressed the importance of examining all areas of British Columbia’s history with our future students, suggesting taking students on field trips so they may receive experiential learning. I especially appreciated Dr. Lim’s lecture on the history of Chinese-Canadians, which was an area I did not learn about in my own K-12 education.
Project EDI: Cultural Mapping of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at a Kamloops Secondary School –
On February 8th, 2024, I attended a presentation on Project EDI by Jayse Matonovich, Dr. Will Garrett-Petts, and Sa-Hali Secondary Principal Jonathan Brady. Using a research technique called cultural mapping, Jayse Matonovich surveyed Sa-Hali Secondary to uncover areas of the school that could benefit from equity, diversity, and inclusion growth. I look forward to implementing what I learned from this presentation in my future classroom.
